St Georges Day adventure Sun 23 April 17

Date: 29th Apr 2017 Author: Scout Websites

Bookham were keen to mark their St Georges day 2017 with an informal and fun event, open to the local community to share all that is good about Scouting and our Bookham Scouting Centre.

We opened the event  by renewing our promises amongst our  flags and some awards were presented  to  Leaders . Then we had an afternoon of everyone joining in with  activities at the Bookham Scouting Centre.

The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and other young visitors scaled the 8 metre tower  of the Climbing Wall provided and run by SOLD (Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development). Archery in the adjacent field run by our Ash Cub Leader was also popular with many hitting the central gold!

The assault course, constructed by Greville  Scout leaders from pioneering poles, nets, groundsheets and many metres  of rope was a huge success as many scrambled, climbed, slid and balanced along the apparatus. The Scouting Centre’s traverse wall, provided a warm up!

For those needing refreshment, there were burgers cooked by the Explorers team and to wash off any ketchup, a spell in the sponge stocks.

Val Hayllar, decorated a large number of faces with creative designs  such as the Scouting fleur de lisle and the St Georges flag .

The competition was fierce during the different heats of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders Tug of War, run by Explorer Leaders, with much cheering, sliding along the grass, and collapsing at the end. But friendships remained intact!

Traditional scouting skills were being  developed too with firelighting in a scallop shell with Ash cubs  Assistant Leader and cooking on a real fire with Hutchison  Scout leaders – marshmallows and chocolate twists were most favoured with apples in sugar a runner up!

Younger visitors were helped by our Puffin and Heron Beaver leaders to create paper rockets, powering their journey with jumping on pop bottles.

Oak Cub Leaders and participants found that shooting balls with mini pyramid catapults made from bamboo canes and flowerpots were quite effective at getting balls in the targets.

Athletically flexible visitors enjoyed the giant Scout logo mat and those wanting a less physical game enjoyed creating rows with the Giant Connect 4 game.
