Group Activity Day May 2016
By Claire
1st Bookham Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Leaders and parent helpers had a wonderful time at Walton Firs Activity Centre in Cobham in May 2016. Over 80 people of all ages participated in the activities.
The Beavers and Cubs explored a winding maze, discovering a Castle in the centre. Wearing helmets with head torches they explored a dark artificial caving system where “Stone Age paintings” and bats (plastic!) were discovered.
The Beavers also enjoyed contorting themselves on a Giant Twister, bowling some strikes on the Skittle alleys, making rockets for the “pop bottle and Beaver jumping powered rocket machine” and identifying objects such as dry pasta and a boomerang in the feely-bag trail.
The Cubs practised their hand and eye co-ordination on the archery where one challenge was to burst the balloons on the targets.
The Cubs and Scouts worked well in their teams, creating high towers from crates, then cheered as the stacks fell and their tower-topper gently swung down on the safety rope.
The Scouts practised a steady hand at the indoor rifle range, creating an impressive close collection of holes on the centre of their paper target sheets. Strength and technique were required for the Scouts on the climbing wall and competition was keen to achieve the climb to ring the bell at the top. Leaders challenged the Scouts to a three legged football match and fortunately, they all finished with 2 legs each.
The Scouts like using gadgets, but rather than a traditional Scouting type made from sticks and string, they soon mastered a 21st Century gadget with some GPS geocaching around the site.
All the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts became a little muddy as they crawled, scrambled and swung their way around the Adventure course, though two Scouts clearly excelled with head to toe mud!
The event opened and closed with a Scouting Flagbreak ceremony and a Group photo.
Adult helpers are always welcome to come and Give It a Go – to see what Scouting can give you!
