Oak Pack Camp 2007

This year we returned to Polyapes in Stoke d’Abernon, which is a particular favourite of ours. Twenty Cubs were going to camp from Friday 4th to Monday 7th May. As in previous years we should thank the Explorer Scouts who put up our tents on Thursday evening.

The Cubs arrived very excited with their holdalls, sleeping bags and bright orange survival bags, eager to start their weekend. The theme of this year’s camp red Indians. The cub 'tribes' were called Sioux, Arapaho, Blackfeet and Cheyenne.

After a sleepless night, everyone was keen to start activities on Saturday. These included an assault course, making a drum, making a tunic and headdress, an obstacle course, making tepees, making and racing a chariot and finally learning about indian signs. I have to give a big thank you to all those parents who helped with these activities.

After such as busy day, the Cubs were beginning to flag, but after a nutritious dinner, Jon Carlier arrived and we had a rousing campfire. Finally the Cubs were allowed to go to sleep – which they all did, giving us a peaceful night!

On Sunday, after a full kit inspection and the preparation of a picnic lunch, we drove to Virginia Water to see the Totem Pole in Windsor Great Park . After several activities we returned to the campsite, where the Cubs wanted 'free time' to continue on-going games in the woods behind the camp. The leaders in the meantime discussed the weather – would it stay dry? No wet tents, please! Fortunately, although it was cloudy, we managed to avoid soaking tents this year. Jon Carlier was a great help, staying all day Sunday to drive the minibus in addition to keeping numerous cubs amused. Thank you Jon!

I would like to thank 'the team', Nicola, Fiona and Catherine, who once again was a wonderful chef. I will have fond memories of Cub camp and would just like to end by wishing you Happy Scouting.
