Hutchison Scout Troop Summer Camp 2007

While we were on camp in Dorset we did lots of fun activities. Two of them were going out on the sea in a speed boat and going to an activity centre.

We drove into Weymouth to get to the speed boat. When we got there we had to split into two groups. One group went out on the boat and the other group went to the beach where we skimmed stones and enjoyed the sun. Then we swapped over so the other group could go on the boat. The boat was really fast. I think most people got wet as it went over the waves and then splashed everybody but they gave us waterproofs so it wasn’t so bad. We saw loads of good things from the boat including a lighthouse, some white cottages and some rock climbers. We managed to get a wave from some people who were walking up on the cliff. Everyone enjoyed it and I would love to do it again. We then had our packed lunch (which we had made before we left camp) on the beach. After clambering over the rocks for a while we walked back to the minibus and headed back to our campsite.

The next day we went on quite a long journey in the mini bus to an activity centre where we did lots of team building exercises. We had to help our partner get around a ropes course without falling off. For some reason this was easier for the smaller scouts but the bigger scouts and the leaders struggled. Then we had to swing on a rope between two trees and get off at the other side. Some people forgot to let go of the rope and swung back the other way or hit the tree which was quite funny. The next challenge was to get across an imaginary river without touching the floor in 2 teams. We were given one mat each which we used as stepping stones.

We then had to make a bridge between two trees that we could walk across using only rope. We managed this quite successfully until some people jumped on the ropes which loosened the bridge so they wobbled.

After lunch we got back in our teams and built rafts using empty water carriers in old wooded crates and string. Then we raced the other team across the lake but we got a bit stuck when they all broke and we had to swim to the side with rafts and then undo what was left of them. It was good fun and everyone had a good time except the instructor. I think she was quite challenged herself that afternoon.
