District Cub Scrapheap challenge 2011

By Claire Thomas

Over 50 cubs from across the District, working in teams, created 15 amazing models of robots-to-help-them-with-a-task at Bookham Scouts HQ in October. The cubs made their own designs from a huge heap of "scrap" such as cardboard boxes, pots, straws, foil, coloured paper, all held together with lots of tape and glue!

Les Lobjoit, our Scout ADC, judged each creation as the cubs crafted their robot and also when each team described their robot to the whole group. All the cubs created their models with great enthusiasm, ingenuity, originality and humour. Some examples were Ambulance robot which had a little pot with "plasters", a red warning light, Drinks robot which served all types of beverage, Christmas tasks robot would write all their thankyou letters, wrap presents and recycle wrapping paper. Breakfast robot's fridge door had a mechanism so that if the user got the code wrong after the third try, spikes would pop out!

We all enjoyed refreshments and games for the cubs outside on the grass in the sunshine.

Marks were very close, but the winning team, 1st Leatherhead Pack who earned the District Cub Trophy Cup and a special certificate. All the cubs who took part were awarded a scrapheap challenge certificate.

Thanks to Les Lobjoit, Karen and Mick Wheeler (Chestnut Pack) Alison Foster (Ash pack), Colin Thomas and all the cub leaders and parents who helped at the event and took away the excess scrap!
