Ash Pack Cubs Go Kayaking

In July 2006, Barry Welch, our District water adviser, his wife, Margaret, and Richard, a former Explorer Scout, took 16 cubs and Baloo from Ash cub pack to the River Wey near Brooklands for a fantastic taster session of kayaking. Barry had previously come to a cub meeting to talk about some basic water safety and kayaking skills and did a few fun games with two kayaks, helmets, waterproofs, buoyancy aids and plastic ducks! Barry, Margaret and Richard also made it a really fun session on the water. It was great for us and the parents to see and hear all the cubs enthuse about their new experience and see their sense of achievement.

Some cubs’ comments:

"The kayaking was exciting because we played lots of games like picking the floating ducks out of the water, throwing wet sponges at each other, running along the kayaks and jumping in to the water, which was the best one. I learnt how to paddle backwards, what to do if your kayak turns over and how to turn kayaks quickly."

"I’d love to go kayaking again. The best bit was jumping in the River"

"The best bits were getting the double-points plastic duck onto my kayak and running along all the kayaks and diving in! When Baloo did that, all the kayaks went really high in the air!"
